Alumnus Update: Catherine Menyhart

After graduating with double IR/French major in 2002 (3.86 GPA), Catherine Menyhart went to work for CIEE (Council for International Educational Exchange) in Dakar, Senegal.  She organized their study abroad program and arranged faculty development seminars.  This fall she was transferred to CIEE's main office in Portland, where she is Manager, Institutional Relationships - East Coast, CIEE Study Centers in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

Kieh Receives Research Award

George Kieh, Professor of Political Science, has been awarded the African Studies and Research Forum of the Association of Third World Studies' "Excellence in Scholarship Award" for 2006. The award recognizes George's "intellectual contributions to peace and conflict and security issues and the democratic reconstitution of the state in Africa." The award was given at the association's annual meeting held November 2-4, 2006, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

German Internship Opportunity

Internships in Germany on the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX)

Description: The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals is a work/study scholarship program to Germany with a strong focus on cultural exchange.  It is designed to give participants an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany.  Funded by the US Congress and German Parliament (Bundestag), the program enables 75 Americans every year to work and study in Germany.  The program year consists of 2 months of intensive German language instruction (no prior German language skills required!), 4 months of classroom instruction at a German university or vocational school, and a 5-month internship in the participant's career field, all while living with a host family or in a shared-apartment. The CBYX program is intended primarily for young adults in engineering, business, technical, vocational, and agricultural fields, though participants from all fields are encouraged to apply. 

*Applicants must be between the ages of 18-24 at the start of the program, and should have a combination of some internship or work experience and a solid academic background in their field.

*Scholarship includes: - Round-trip international airfare - Tuition for university in Germany - Cost of host family or shared apartment monthly stipend during schooling phase - Pre-program, midyear, and final seminars in Washington DC, Germany, and New York - Assistance finding internship through regional offices in Germany - Support throughout the year from German partner organization (InWEnt)

*Qualifications: A candidate for the program must: - Be a US citizen or permanent resident - Be between 18 and 24 years old at the start of the program - Have a high school diploma - Have clear career goals and some work experience - Have a strong interest in international affairs and Germany - Demonstrate flexibility, independence and diplomacy - Have a strong sense of American identity

The Many Faces of Islam

Vali Nasr, Author of The Shia Revival (W. W. Norton) and Professor of Political Science at the Naval Postgraduate School will be coming Wednesday, November 29, 7 p.m. to talk about the many faces of Islam. Talks on the presidency

Distinguished presidential historian Richard Norton Smith will visit Grand Valley as a Hauenstein Center Scholar in Residence between November 12th and 15th. During that time he will deliver lectures about the U.S. presidency on Grand Valley's Allendale campus, Pew Grand Rapids campus, and at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.

IR Major's Nephew Dies In Refugee Camp

On November 12, the Grand Rapids Press featured a story about GVSU International Relations Major Dorothy Sewe and her nephews, one of whom recently died in a refugee camp in Tanzania. The story recounts her efforts to help them come to the US and her goal of working for the UN on refugee issues. The PLS Department and the IR program wish to express our most sincere condolences to Dorothy and her family.

ASPA is pleased to announce the launching of PublicServiceCareers.org. 
ASPA has launched the new site in partnership with the Association for 
Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM) and the National 
Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA). 
Our collaboration has resulted in the development of a new career web 
site, known as PublicServiceCareers.org.

The site has been created to strengthen the visibility and identity of 
the public service career sector, the public policy and management 
field, and professionalism within public affairs and administration 
among students, employers, and universities. When completed, the home 
page will feature a comprehensive career center with all the information 
you’ve been looking for: background on all the different types of jobs 
abroad and at home for those who want to make a difference; information 
about MPA and MPP professional degrees (and PhD academic degrees) for 
public service; salaries; profiles of individuals in professional public 
service; tips for applying and interviewing for public sector jobs; 
links to other organizations in the field.

Padnos Scholarship for Study Abroad

Padnos Scholarship
The Barbara H. Padnos International Scholars program provides grants for academic year programs overseas. Grants in the $2,500-$10,000 range will be given, depending on the length of overseas study and the cost of the program. Students are expected to engage in serious study for an extended period of time in an approved study abroad program and must have a minimum GPA of 3.0.

GVSU Peace and Justice Award

The GVSU Peace and Justice award emphasizes the cause of peace and justice in the affairs of peoples and nations and/or increasing sensitivity to the concerns aroused by the presence of nuclear arms and other sophisticated armaments in the world.

Who should apply: Any degree seeking undergraduate with personal convictions that match the purpose of the award.
