Alumnus Update: Tim Zeeb '02

From Tim Zeeb '02:

It was great to get your mail and take a look at the Poli Sci and IR
websites! I hope that all is well for you and the semester is treating you
well.

As for me, life has been interesting since graduating from GVSU in 2002.
I've ended up on a path that I never envisioned while focusing on IR and
Poli Sci. After graduating, I started working at an automotive company
called Venture Industries in the Detroit area. After working there for
three years, I moved over to a large French Automaker called Faurecia, which
was headquartered in Paris. While I spent most of my time in Michigan, my
IR background was extremely beneficial.

Somehow, I managed to complete my Master's of Science in Finance degree at
Walsh College while working, and a few months ago, I accepted a position at
a Conway Mackenzie & Dunleavy, which is a financial consulting firm that
focuses on corporate restructuring and corporate bankruptcy. While I have
only been there for a limited time, it has been a great experience to date,
and I have great hopes for the future. Plus, I'm getting immersed in
corporate bankruptcy law, which has been quite challenging, yet quite
interesting.

Midwest Model European Union

GVSU students excel at the Midwest Model European Union

While other students were busy preparing for final exams during the last week of classes, fourteen Grand Valley students took on the additional roles of EU officials and European government ministers at the Midwest Model European Union. About 150 students from twelve universities attended the international political simulation, which is held annually at Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis. GVSU's Belgium and Portugal delegations were voted the second and fifth best-prepared of the twenty-two delegations. Brad Hunter represented EU Commission president José Barroso, while Mike Muns chaired the Directors-General. Pete Ellis won, and Jeff Criteser was the runner-up for, the Best Agriculture Minister award. Emily Westaby was the runner-up for the Best Foreign Minister. Students participated in the simulation as part of PLS321, The European Union, taught by Prof. John Constantelos.

Alumnus Update: John David Gawron '88

David John Gawron '88:

http://www.goldenrulepatriot.com/

I am a 1988 graduate. I have self-published a book this past winter.
Below is an except from my acknowledgments, my bio and a copy of the cover.

Many inspired me in creating this book. I acknowledge Professor William Baum, of Grand Valley State University, who reviewed the manuscript in a 1988 independent study. He helped crystallize my thinking during the independent study and Constitutional Law courses. I acknowledge the Political Science and History Departments of Grand Valley State University and the Social Sciences Department of Muskegon Community College, whose professors inspired critical thinking and a thorough introspection of the ideas. I acknowledge the late Chester Graham, a WWI veteran and Quaker peace activist, for his ideals and tireless work for peace.

This is a philosophical treatise, a book of argument rather than a book of cited proofs. I acknowledge historians, philosophers, and the living history of the media for the ideas and information found in this work. I owe my greatest tribute to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. whose ideals are a driving force in my thinking. I am influenced by the political philosophers who wrote the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the equal protection clauses, and the Equal Rights Amendment.

It is 2007 and I am 52. The past 18 years I have worked as a social worker. I have provided substance abuse treatment, served as a mediator/investigator to settle disputes concerning parenting time and child custody, and worked as a client services manager for community mental health. Previously, I worked as a machine operator at a small business machine shop and at a conglomerate-owned unionized factory.

I am a political animal. I have studied non-violent struggle and war. I studied political science and history in college. I observe the political world. Since my youth I have been a news junkie, consuming books, newspapers, magazines, documentaries, and TV news. I consciously analyze political, economic, social, and environmental reality. I have debated people whose political viewpoints range from the far right to the far left and points between.

I am the son of a union laborer and union social worker, the grandson of Polish immigrants and German-French northern Michigan farm stock. I am a third generation social worker. My maternal grandfather was a social worker after World War II. I was born November 15, 1954 and raised in Muskegon, on Michigan’s West Coast of Lake Michigan. Since my teens I have worked in political campaigns and in peace, environmental, and women’s rights groups. In 1976, I wrote an essay, “The Golden Rule Economy,” discussing economics beyond Left and Right. This book has grown into a tree from that once small seed.

In 1987 I survived near murder by a parolee who invaded my home and attempted to stab me in the heart in my bed as I awoke from sleep. I fought him off despite a slashed thigh and drove him from my home saving my son and then-wife. My assailant received life in prison after I refused a plea bargain.

In 1988, I ran for Congress as a Democrat challenging Rep. Guy VanderJagt. I experienced first hand the power of the campaign finance by special interests.

Alumnus Update: Bob DeVries '06

From Bob DeVries '06:
I saw your blog entry about what some of the PLS alumni are doing.
When I graduated in August of 2006 I had already been working as the
campaign manager for a State House candidate, Arlan Meekhof.

I continued doing this until the election in November and after we won
the election he hired me as his chief of staff. So I now head up his
office in Lansing and it's great.

Alumnus Update: Leo Hendges

From Leo Hendges:

Well, I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do when I graduated GVSU
until I took Pls 495, first amendment law. That made me realize that I
was interested in going to law school. It was more video games than
anything else. The idea that the ESRB is an industry standard and that
Congress might try to censor video games really stoked my interest.
There was also a course I took with Professor Constantelos, the European
Union. I went as the Agricultural Minister of Spain and won an award.
My colleagues voted me the best agricultural minister.
The model EU was an intersection of interests for me. I doubled in
French and Poli Sci at GVSU. I spent part of the summer 02 in Nice on
the study abroad program. Also, the EU is politics in action.
I picked Albany Law for a number of reasons. The programs they offer such
as Nairobi during the summer, or the the semester or year exchange to France.
Albany Law is the only school in the capital of NY. We get all
of the field placements and internships in NY's capital.
I am leaving for Nairobi May 29th, and I am going to spend next year in
France.

Alumnus Update: Bob Monaghan '67

Directly from Pioneer Class Member Bob Monaghan, '67:
I was/am a member of the Pioneer Class of what was then Grand Valley State College where I became a member of the first class at GVSC in the fall of 1963. My major was Political Science and I was graduated in June of 1967 and I believe that I was the first recipient of the Political Science Department Award. I fondly remember Don Herman and Bill Baum from whom I took most of my PS courses. With the assistance of Bill Baum, I went on to the Graduate School at the University of Iowa (no small task since GVSC was not accredited at the time), majoring in International Relations. I was also the first Head Resident Advisor of Copeland House in 1966-67.
Career wise, I spent 34 years in the corporate business world holding mainly executive level Human Resource positions for GE, Howmet, Ciba-Geigy, Siemens and Chris Craft Boats. I took an early retirement incentive package in 2002 and took a position as the Executive Director of a nonprofit arts organization for the next 2+ years. Since then, I have become a licensed Realtor in the State of Texas and have been listing and selling real estate for the last two years. Due to some minor health issues and a desire to both explore more of the country and spend more time with my grandkids, I plan to retire for the third time in the near future.
I think you would be pleased by the fact that I have repeatedly told anyone that would listen that I directly attribute my success in the business world to my undergraduate education at what is now GVSU. I also have tried to demonstrate that by financially contributing to GVSU to the extent of underwriting the plaque that lists the original faculty members which I believe still hangs in the Alumni House, plus underwriting the cost of one of the "hotel" rooms in the Alumni Center. I also was genuinely pleased to be a commencement speaker several years ago when Don Lubbers was still the President.
Life has been great, and I thank you for the opportunity of my once again recalling my very pleasant memories of my time at Grand Valley.
Sincerely,
Bob Monaghan '67Dscn1282

We have heard several interesting stories including an email from a member of the pioneer class of 1963 who has gone on to a long, varied, and successful career! We are thrilled with the response we have received and will be conveying these alumni stories as we move into the spring, so stay tuned.

If you would rather chime in directly, I'll leave this as an open thread.

Post-graduation Plans?

We are always looking for stories about Political Science, International Relations and Pre-law students and alumni, so drop Professor Richards (richardm@gvsu.edu) or Professor den Dulk (dendulkk@gvsu.edu) (or any of the faculty) a line and let us know what's happening post-graduation.
