Robert Monaghan, B.A.
Political Science - Pioneer Class of 1967

He graduated in 1967, winning honors as the first recipient of the Political Science Department Award.

Art and Politics: Beehive Collective

Wednesday, October 17th, 2-5pm - The Beehive will give a presentation
open to ALL interested students, in the Calder Art Center Padnos
Gallery.
Thursday, October 18th, 7:30pm - The Beehive will give a free PUBLIC
lecture at the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts, located on 41
Sheldon Blvd., downtown Grand Rapids.

The Beehive Design Collective is a non-profit, volunteer-driven
political-arts organization based in eastern Maine. The group use the
creation of images as a means of deconstructing and educating the
public about complex geopolitical issues. The Bees generate
collaborative, hand-illustrated posters of dizzying intricacy based
upon the stories related to them during their travels.

Members of their hive tour extensively, collecting field research and
interviewing community members about the effects of globalization in
their lives. The imagery of their posters features characters from the
animal and plant world, which serve as metaphors for issues as diverse
as biotechnology, colonialism, and corporate homogenization.

The Beehive is currently touring the U.S. in order to raise funds for
the printing and distribution of their graphic opus, "Mesoamerica
Resist'e". "Resist'e" is an illustrated exploration of widespread
community resistance to the Central American mega-development known as
"Plan Puebla Panama."

For more information, visit the Beehive Collective website.
