This week GVSU students representing 4 different political parties (Libertarians, Republicans, Democrats, and Socialists) will be presenting their views on important issues like the economy, health care, war, and immigration.  The presentations will be followed with a Q & A session from students interested in learning more about the political spectrum that GVSU students have to offer.

Feb. 26 Free Practice Test for GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, and OAT in AuSable

On Saturday, the 26th, of February, Kaplan is providing students a free practice test for the GRE, LSAT, MCAT, DAT, and OAT. The tests will be held at 9:00am in AuSable Hall- Room 1116.  Graduate school hopefuls will be able to take the actual exam under proctored conditions and receive a score analysis following the exam.  In addition, Kaplan will provide lunch at the event. The entire day is free of charge; students can leave their wallets at home if they wish. The goal is to provide students with the opportunity to see where they currently stand for graduate school and what steps they need to take to prepare themselves for the next level.

 

The entire event is free, but space is limited to the first 250 who reserve a seat. Students can register at anytime prior to the 26^thby using the following link:

Dr. Mangala's New Books and Teaching Award

Dr. Jacques Mangala was recently awarded a Pew Teaching Excellence Award by GVSU. In addition, two books he edited have been published:

Africa and the New World Era: From Humanitarianism to a Strategic View. Dr. Polly Diven contributed a chapter to this book: "U.S. AIDS Policy in Africa: Balancing Competing Interests in PEPFAR Policy-Making."

New Security Threats and Crises in Africa: Regional and International Perspectives.

 

 

 

2011 Outstanding Students in Political Science and International Relations

Kendall Van Ameyde (Political Science) and Shawn Wooster (International Relations) have been chosen as outstanding students for the 2010-2011 academic year. Both students have a 4.0 GPA. They will be honored at a university event in April. Congratulations!

Put your degree to work! GVSU is pleased to be hosting the State of Michigan Department of Human Services (DHS) for a three-day career event featuring an expedited application and interview process. DHS will be on campus to recruit for 500+ open child welfare service positions beginning in March and May of 2011. Qualified applicants must have a bachelor's or master's degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, sociology, or family/child development; those with related degrees/work experience are also encouraged to apply.

Dr. James J. Zogby is the author of Arab Voices (Palgrave Macmillan, October 2010) and the founder and president of the Arab American Institute (AAI), a Washington, D.C.-based organization which serves as the political and policy research arm of the Arab American community. He currently serves on the national advisory board of the American Civil Liberties Union, The Human Rights Watch Board of Directors for the Middle East and North Africa and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Additionally, he is a Senior Advisor for the polling firm Zogby International. Dr. Zogby writes a weekly column, "Washington Watch," which is currently published in 14 Arab and South Asian countries. From 2001 until now he hosts the award winning "Viewpoint with James Zogby" on Abu Dhabi Television, LinkTV, Dish Network, and DirecTV.

The Bloom Collective is hosting a screening of the film Scarred
Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre 1968 on Thursday, February 10th in
Grand Rapids.

Scarred Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre 1968 brings to light one of
the bloodiest tragedies of the Civil Rights era after four decades of
deliberate denial. The killing of four white students at Kent State
University in 1970 left an indelible stain on our national
consciousness. But most Americans know nothing of the three black
students killed at South Carolina State College in Orangeburg two
years earlier. This scrupulously researched documentary finally offers
the definitive account of that tragic incident and reveals the
environment that allowed it to be buried for so long. It raises
disturbing questions about how our country acknowledges its tortured
racial past in order to make sense of its challenging present.
