Join the GVSU Delegation to the Model Organization of American States, Winter 2012

To the left, members of the 2010 GVSU delegation to the Model Organization of American States (MOAS) are awaiting the start of the General Assembly in the Hall of Americas in the OAS Headquarters, near the Mall in Washington, DC. They represented Argentina, and worked with other country delegations on issues such as the impact of rising sea levels on Caribbean island nations, women’s literacy, disaster preparedness, narcotrafficking, and an emergency meeting to resolve a potential military confrontation between Colombia and Venezuela.
Students can participate in MOAS by taking LAS 320, Model of Organization of American States, offered in the Winter semester, Tue & Thu, 10-11:15am, LOH 179. This course, taught by Dr. Andrew Schlewitz, is wrapped around preparations for participating in the Model Organization of American States, held in Washington, DC, April 3-7, 2012. (GVSU’s Latin American Studies Program will cover the cost of registration, travel, and lodging; students are responsible for food expenses).
Students will work together to learn the structure and rules of the OAS, master contemporary inter-American issues, write resolutions, as well as study the country they will represent—Grenada—and think about the practice and theory of international relations, particularly in regard to international organizations. The MOAS conference includes a day for sight-seeing, a meeting with a representative of the Grenada Embassy, and the opportunity to meet students from around thirty colleges and universities across the States and Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Venezuela.
The course counts for credit in both Latin American Studies and Political Science/International Relations, and may be repeated for credit. Pre-requisites include LAS 210 and either PLS 211 or 284, though waivers for these pre-requisites are typically granted for equivalent learning or experience. If you have questions, please contact Dr. Schlewitz at schlewia@gvsu.edu. For more information on MOAS, please visit: http://wmoas.shss.cofc.edu/.
