Brothers, Sisters and Soldiers: Egypt's Transition to Democracy

The World Affairs Council of Western Michigan Presents this Great Decisions Foreign Policy Discussion Series Event:

Egypt's bumpy transition from the autocratic rule of President Hosni Mubarak to its post-Arab Spring reality has put many on edge.  What is the role of the military, the Muslim Brotherhood and the growth of civil or secular groups, and especially the role of women, in a transition to democracy?  What challenges does the new Egypt pose for American policymakers and U.S. allies in the region?

Dr. Annie Dandavati, 2012 Visiting Professor, American University in Cairo,  

Dr. Annie Dandavati

brings both a scholarly and a personal perspective to the discussion: her sabbatical in Cairo coincided with the revolution and she and her family were witnesses to the uprising and demonstrations in Tahrir Square.

Dr. Dandavati is the Chair and Professor of Political Science and Director of International Studies at Hope College.
