Ryan Meyer Wins Henry Internship

Ryan Meyer has been named the winner of the Henry Internship Competition. He will intern in Washington, D.C. this summer. Congratulations, Ryan!

The Paul B. Henry Foundation is named in honor of the late Paul B. Henry, who served West Michigan in the House of Representatives from 1985-1993

Henry Internship Competition

The GVSU Department of Political Science is now accepting applications for the Henry Internship competition. The Henry Internship places a GVSU student in the Washington, D.C., offices of one of Michigan’s U.S. Representatives or Senators during the spring/summer 2012 session. The Paul B. Henry Foundation pays a scholarship of $2,000 to defray the costs of travel and living expenses, and Henry Interns also receive a free tuition for up to 6 credits.

 

ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible, students must have completed a minimum of 55 credits by the end of this semester (Winter 2012) and are expected to report about their experiences to the GVSU community during the 2012/13 academic year.

 

APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Please submit a resume, transcript (unofficial is fine), one recommendation letter, and an essay of up to 750 words addressing your reasons for seeking the internship, relevant experiences that prepare you for it, and how it will advance your career and educational goals. Students may also identify a Senator or Representative with whom they would prefer to work (keep in mind that placement with that legislator is not guaranteed). Turn in completed applications to Prof. Donald Zinman, Political Science Dept., ASH 1127 (zinmand@gvsu.edu).

Internship Information Session

On Tuesday, January 10, 4PM in Lake Ontario Hall room 174 there will be an informational session about political science internships. Professor Zinman will discuss our internship program, the benefits of completing a political science internship and our expectations of student interns. We can also discuss the Washington Center program and the Henry Fellowship as well. Questions are welcome. If you are considering an internship in the coming semester or at any time in your GVSU future you should attend if you are free on Tuesday at 4PM.

Intern in DC: The Washington Center Information Session

If you are at all interested in participating in the Washington Center internships and academic seminars program next semester or in summer 2012, you will want to attend this presentation on Tuesday, November 8 at 7PM in Manitou 123.

A representative of the Washington Center will be on the Grand Valley campus that day and visiting several classrooms. At 7PM he will be giving a presentation on the Washington Center programs and answering your questions. This is a significant opportunity for students to earn course credits (usually 12 credits) and make important professional connections.

You do not have to be a PLS or IR major to partake in the Washington Center.

GV in DC!

On July 20, GVSU Professor den Dulk and student-interns in Washington, DC, met with members of Grand Valley's DC Alumni Club to discuss professional goals and career strategies. What a stellar group of alumni! While no alum at the discussion had graduated earlier than 1998 - and most in the mid-2000s - they nevertheless represented impressive professional achievements, including high-level positions in major government, financial, entertainment, and non-profit organizations.
