Shanna Stebbins Corner studies Human Rights in Jerusalem

Shanna Stebbins Corner, GVSU IR graduate in 2005, is working on her Masters in International Affairs at the Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver. Together with ten other students, Shanna was chosen to participate in a program at the Minerva Center for Human Rights at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. They were in Jerusalem for ten weeks, interning at different human rights organizations and studying the history of the conflict and international human rights law.

Batchelder Scholarship Winners

The GVSU Political Science department is pleased to announce that Josh Aldrich and Kaitlyn Kirouac have each been awarded a $1,000 John T. Batchelder Scholarship for 2009-10. Congratulations!

The John T. Batchelder Political Science Scholarship honors John Thayer Batchelder who served as a Grand Valley State University professor until his retirement in 1997.

U.S. Ambassador to Russia Speaks in Grand Rapids

U.S. Ambassador to Russia John Beyrle recently spoke at an event sponsored by the World Affairs Council of West Michigan. Dr. Polly Diven attended the event, along with some of our International Relations students.

Presidential Inauguration Scholarship Winners

The Detroit Free Press has published a column today by GVSU political science major Felix Sharpe. Sharpe writes insightfully about the politics of riding the GVSU shuttle bus.

Two Political Science Majors Win Warner LSAT Preparation Scholarship

Jeanine Anderson and Markanetta Jones, both GVSU political science majors, have been named recipients of the Warner Norcross & Judd LSAT Preparation Course Scholarship. Congratulations!

PLS Major Wins Logie Fellowship

Political science major Cynthia Facko has been named the winner of the John H. Logie Fellowship. During the fall 2008 semester, she will be performing an internship in Grand Rapids city government. John Logie was a longstanding mayor of Grand Rapids.

The complex arena of city government offers numerous opportunities for students, whether they seek enrichment of their educations as citizen of the world or they are pursuing experiences that will help them reach particular occupational goals. Students awarded one-semester John Logie Fellowships work in individual consultation with representatives from the City of Grand Rapids to tailor the fellowship experience to his or her specific talents and areas of interest. The first points of contact for Logie Fellows will be with the Senior Executive Staff of the City of Grand Rapids, including the City Manager, the Deputy and Assistant Managers, and their staffs, as well as with Former Mayor John H. Logie.

The fellowship is competitive and is awarded on an annual basis.

IR Internships Summer 2008

Two international relations students will be participating in internships this summer. Noelle Gornik will be working with with the Orphanage of San Miguel in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. Derek Atkinson will intern with U.S. Representative Pete Hoekstra in his Holland office.

GVSU Political Science course PLS 205 The Policy Process was featured on WZZM news on April 24, and the video is currently at the top of the most popular videos list at WZZM.com. Students from the class prepared a policy report and presented it to M & M Energy. which is planning the Great Lakes Energy and Research Park.
