Study Abroad Scholarship Winners

Two International Relations students, Matthew Brainovich and Sean Wooster, have been awarded prestigious, nationally competitive Boren Scholarships for Study Abroad; Wooster was designated as an alternate. Recently, Brainovich was also awarded a GVSU Padnos Scholarship to study in Russia, while Wooster was awarded a GVSU Padnos Scholarship for study in Romania.

IR student Mario Amaya-Velasquez has won a GVSU Murray Scholarship to study in Perugia in the summer and fall, and he won a Sister Cities Scholarship as well, as detailed in our previous post.  

The GVSU International Relations Program has also awarded $500 Study Abroad Scholarships to Sarah Bierlein (Jordan), Sheila Garcia (Japan) and David Gallagher (Spain).

Students Win Sister City Scholarships to Study in Perugia, Italy

Congratulations to GVSU students Mario Amaya Velazquez and Angela Tramontelli for winning Sister City Scholarships to Study in Perugia, Italy. Mario is an International Relations major. He will study at the Universitá per Stranieri and then spend a semester at the University of Perugia, as part of a trilaterial exchange that was established through the work of GVSU Political Science Professor John Constantelos.

Eradicating Child Slavery and Exploitation in Ghana

IR Major Awarded Saudi Arabia Winter Fellowship

Lizzie Heyboer, major in IR and minor in MES at GVSU, was recently awarded the Saudi Arabia Winter Fellowship, from the National Council on US-Arab Relations and the Saudi Ministry of Higher Education. Lizzie was one of eight college students in the U.S. who were chosen for this fully-funded trip to Saudi Arabia. To be eligible, students had to have participated in the Model Arab League program. The Saudi Arabia Fellowship program consists of a pre-departure orientation seminar in Washington, DC, followed by two weeks inside the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

 

Political Science Study Abroad Student Experiences Protests in Moscow

Alexandra Spurlock, a political science student who received the Padnos Scholarship, is currently studying in Russia at the School of Russian and Asian Studies. She writes, "I was fortunate enough to be in Moscow during the first big protest against the elections. I notified my organization that I had went, and they asked me to write about my experience." STAIR Students Present Research at International Studies Conference

GVSU students Emily Brown, Meghan Thatcher and Anna Marotti presented their research at the Annual Conference of the Midwest International Studies Association in St. Louis, November 11-13, 2011. These three students all completed the STAIR (Studies in Trans-Atlantic International Relations) dual degree program at Cracow University of Economics. As part of their degree, they wrote a 50+ page thesis, which they then modified and presented at the ISA Midwest. Professor Polly Diven helped them prepare for this conference.

Political Science Major John Rood Wins Nationally Competitive Gilman Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and the  Institute for International Education (IIE) have named four GVSU students as Gilman Scholars for the Winter 2011 semester. This sets a new record for the largest number of Gilman Scholars selected in one award cycle for GVSU. Onawa Gardiner, Advertising & Public Relations major with Spanish & nonprofit administration minors will study in Chile; Ferris Jumah, triple major: Statistics, Accounting & Finance and a minor in Hospitality & Tourism Management, will study in Turkey; Marcy McCourt, Health Professions major and John Rood, double major in Political Science & Philosophy will both study abroad in India. The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program received nearly 2,900 applications for over 850 awards. The total scholarship amount for all four awards is $18,500. We congratulate these students on this outstanding achievement and wish them safe travels. They join a growing number of GVSU Gilman Scholars.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies abroad. Such international study is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. Each student looks forward to the adventures that await them and to sharing their experiences with their colleagues upon their return to campus.

The next Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program campus deadline is February 14, 2011 for students who plan to study abroad in fall 2011. Students are strongly encouraged to set up an on-line OASIS account through the Padnos International Center, 130 LOH, well before the February 1, 2011 GVSU study abroad application deadline and meet with Amanda Cuevas, Office of Fellowships Director, 120 NMH to learn about the Gilman Scholarship eligibility and application requirements.
